Brown joined the Newark Police Division in 1997 and was promoted to sergeant in Jan. 2019. He worked for the Safe City Task Force and the Emergency Service Unit, among other assignments, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé said on Facebook.
"Known for his expertise within the Emergency Services Unit, Sergeant Brown dedicated the past 26 years to ensuring the safety of Newark residents and visitors," Baraka said. "We cannot thank him enough for his outstanding service."
Fragé said Brown was an "exemplary police supervisor who consistently offered the highest caliber of service."
"Sergeant Brown exceeded our best standards through his impeccable work ethic and uncompromising professionalism," Fragé said. "He will be deeply missed.”
The fundraiser will go toward Brown's family to help with funeral costs and medical bills. Brown is survived by his wife, Ann, his daughter Casey, his sisters, Barbara and Karen, and several nieces and nephews, according to his obituary. As of Wednesday, Jan. 24, the fundraiser has raised more than $25,445.
Newark police are also mourning the loss of Sgt. Rafael Ramos, who died on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at the age of 59.
Visitation for Brown will be held on Thursday, Jan. 25 at Armitage and Wiggins Funeral Home in Kearny from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. at Cathedral Basilica of The Sacred Heart in Newark on Friday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. Brown will be buried at Holy Cross Cemetery.
